The First Week

View from the 7th floor break room at WGU in Academics.

Since moving to Utah for this new job & finishing my first full week here, I’m feeling very blessed & glad about my big career decision. The team I’m on is absolutely amazing, talented & super smart. I mean, truly stellar people, both career-wise & from the heart. As I’ve drifted into excited verbal exchanges, I’ve been impressed by the passion everyone reveals in their initiatives & work. Such passion!

There’s an awesome campaign around character & values, right now, & it’s wonderful to see that those things resonate even in how well employees are treated. It’s crazy special.

This is one of four buildings at the SLC site, the one that houses most academic leadership.

Another view.

The views really are spectacular at the WGU Utah site, with expanses of mountains in multiple directions. When the clouds float over the peaks, they create a kind of kaleidoscopic patchwork of shifting shadows. It’s tough to not just sit in amazement, gawking at stunning views.

For a NH girl, I feel like I get the best of both worlds––sweeping natural views like those at Franconia Notch & a professional setting that can support one’s career long-term.

One of the views from one of many amazing conference rooms.

Not sure which is more exciting, the mountain views or on-site parking.

This upcoming week, senior leadership will be heading to Park City for a retreat & strategic planning, which is really exciting for someone like me. It does feel odd at times to start all over again in establishing work relationships, but this team & leadership are amazing & well worth the effort. So much heart, caring, & genuine wishes to help out that I almost can’t believe it.

Many veterans here reinforce that no, everyone really is that nice & helpful. Some have been here as long as twenty years! Incredible, when you think about the online environment.

Part of the panoramic view.

There will be many more pictures to come, but I wanted to report in on my first full week. There’s so much to learn, but it’s an exciting time, as there’s so much potential for the institution for the future. I didn’t know Salt Lake City had such a booming tech industry here! I mean, it makes sense that a cutting-edge online higher ed provider would be based here, given that context! But little did I know.

When we discuss “the future of work” & “robot-proof education,” key stakeholders at WGU are willing to not only listen but act as trailblazers leading the way, just as they have with CBE. I feel honored to have a spot at that table, engaging in conversations & planning for true innovation. And gorgeous views of nature restore the batteries for an introvert like me.

Mountains & more mountains.

Misty mountain.
